Delegates from CÉFFA meet with Father Denis prior to renovating a senior's lodge at Boaco

2014 - A year of mutual enrichment

This past year 94 people in five delegations traveled to Nicaragua to lend a hand renovating, digging, building, and socializing and celebrating with  their hosts in five communities. Canadians and Nicaraguans worked side by side on many of these projects. All felt enriched by the experience as the grateful recipients expressed heartfelt thanks for making their lives more comfortable, more dignified and more joyful. The Canadian delegates raised money in advance for their designated projects,  including:

  • a seven-member  group from Donnelly and St-Isidore who repaired masonry and toilets and painted the infirmary of a seniors residence in the village of Boaco. They also left a gift of $6000 to pay for further badly needed repairs
  • a group of 23 students from Calgary and another 13 students  from Bonnyville who built 10  latrines and septic tanks for the most marginalized villagers in San Benito
  • a group of 17 students and 3 teachers from Ecole Maurice Lavallee in Edmonton who built 15 latrines for families in Cinco Pinos. This project was funded in part by the Canadian students and in part by the local credit union which was started in Cinco Pinos in 2009 with the help of FUNDACCO and Roots of Change
  • a nine-member group from Mallaig who helped to construct a new well and water pumping and distribution system for the marginalized residents of Las Lomitas in northern Nicaragua
  • a seven-member group from St Albert who built a multipurpose outdoor court for recreation and meetings/socializing in the town of Belen.
