Milestones 2005 - 2015


  • March 2005 - First delegation visit to Nicaragua organized by Roots of Change Foundation

  • November 2005 – Roots of Change Foundations is registered in Alberta as a charitable society, thereby instituting the Foundation representing Father Denis Hébert's vision to bring social justice and relieve the poverty of the disadvantaged in Nicaragua.

  • October 2007 – FUNDACCO, our partner organization, is formed and registered with the Nicaraguan government as a charitable society. As part of this process, FUNDACCO is also listed with the Canada Revenue Agency as our agent with a mandate to continue the missionary work of Father Denis in Nicaragua.
  • 2009 - The FUNDACCO Scholarship Fund is established following a visit by an Alberta delegation to several Nicaraguan communities.  The purpose is to prepare the many high school graduates, who have very little opportunity for employment in their own communities, for careers that could help themselves, their families and communities to an improved standard of living.

  • March 2009 - The San Raphael Clinic is opened in Managua  This Clinic, the largest single project supported by Roots of Change Foundation, was built and is owned by our partner FUNDACCO to serve people who would otherwise not get the medical help they need.

  • March 2009 – The Roots of Change Foundation became a registered charity in Canada.

  • August 2009 – The role of Project Administrator was established to administer and track projects in Nicaragua, including the reporting requirements of the Canada Revenue Agency. 

  • January 2010 – The role of Donations Administrator was established to administer donations from a rapidly growing donor base and to satisfy the requirements of the Canada Revenue Agency.

  • April 2011 - The Father Denis Hébert Volunteer Award is established to assist two volunteers each year to travel to Nicaragua to learn about the life of the poor and to bring goodness and hope into the lives of the needy.

  • November 2011 – The Roots of Change Planned Giving Program was established in association with the Edmonton Community Foundation to provide sustained funding for the annual operating budget into the future.

  • December 2011 - Donations surpassed the $1,000,000 mark since the inception of the Roots of Change Foundation in 2005.

  • March 2014 - Seven of the original FUNDACCO Scholarship recipients embark on new careers in their chosen fields.

  • April 14, 2015 - Our founder, Father Denis Hebert, completes his earthly journey.  The people he groomed to be FUNDACCO leaders continue the work of humanitarian projects funded by Roots of Change Foundation.
